My approach to psychiatry goes beyond simply prescribing medication. While medication can often be an essential component of treatment, I believe in integrative approaches that consider all aspects of well-being. Whether it is therapy and counseling alone, or combination treatment that supports healing through nutrition, medication, or other medical care that directly impacts psychological health, I work closely with patients to develop personalized treatment plans that consider their individual needs and goals.
— Dr. Whitney Gilley

Our Difference

New Directions Psychiatry PLLC provides an option for psychiatry in Owensboro that goes beyond what is normally available at large centers and mental health clinics.

Personalized care.

With a whole-person approach, treatment is tailored to your individual needs. Dr. Whitney Gilley works with you to choose the treatment options that fit your individual wellness goals.

To gain a greater sense of who you are as a person, Dr. Gilley makes it a priority to understand your needs, stressors, supports, goals, and values. To ensure time for a holistic approach to your care, this practice focuses on quality over seeing a large volume of patients. Dr. Gilley is available to patients by phone for questions and concerns and returns patient calls herself. To optimize your privacy, there are no staff involved in patient care or administrative duties.

There are many aspects in our lives that impact mood and behavior. When tailoring treatment options to an individual patient, Dr. Gilley considers things such as non-psychiatric health conditions and medications, nutrition, daily activities, family history or genetics, and prior treatment effects and experiences.

Honest specialty care with a doctor.

Many sites advertise having psychiatry, but then schedule patients with clinicians that are not physicians with psychiatry specialty training. At New Directions Psychiatry PLLC, you always see a doctor specializing in psychiatry.

Not everyone who provides behavioral healthcare is a physician specialist, even if they prescribe medication. It can be even harder to know who is treating you with online therapy or virtual medication prescriptions. Whoever you see should always be open about their credentials, even before you book an appointment. At New Directions Psychiatry, PLLC, your appointment is always directly with a physician (MD) specializing in psychiatry.

To specialize in psychiatry, a doctor receives the same rigorous medical school education all physicians receive to earn an MD. They then undergo years of specialty training in the diagnosis and treatment of emotional and behavioral health disorders and the use of medications for these conditions. Psychiatrists receive training in psychotherapy and other therapeutic interventions throughout their four-year residency training.

Choice in treatment.

With a collaborative approach to your care, Dr. Gilley works with you so you can decide together the best options for your individual needs.

You don’t have to split therapy and medication treatment between a therapist and a prescriber. Get care your care from one place, one professional.

Dr. Gilley works with you to determine what treatments align with your wellness goals. As a psychiatrist, she is trained in a wide range of treatment options, she can counsel you on whether therapy, counseling, medication, integrative options, or a combination of these treatments would best fit your needs. You work together to decide what options work best for your individual goals.

Therapies offered including CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy), Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, integrative and supportive therapy. Dr. Gilley keeps up-to-date on the latest treatments and considers care from a whole-person, holistic approach.

More time with your doctor.

Less wait and more appointment flexibility means you can access care at the frequency you need. You have the option for weekly therapy—all directly with a doctor.

Time is needed to provide quality care for emotional and behavioral health conditions and concerns. Initial appointments are typically around 1.5 to 2 hours—all directly with your doctor. This provides time for a full evaluation, discussion of treatment options, brief counseling about your condition or concern, and the opportunity for questions.

At New Directions Psychiatry PLLC, no appointments are scheduled for less than 30 minutes. Patients have the option for more frequent appointments than available in many clinics. As a psychotherapy-oriented practice, most therapy sessions are 50 minutes, and many patients are seen weekly or every other week.

Convience.

Convenient online video visits save you time. No public waiting rooms. No commute.

Whether you feel comfortable at home or have another quiet, private space you can use for a virtual doctor’s visit, online care brings the specialist to you. No public waiting rooms or long drives to see a psychiatrist.

Because this is a small, patient-focused practice, there is often more flexibility in scheduling including option for more frequent appointments, Saturday appointments and weekly therapy with the doctor.

Having a psychiatrist that offers both medication and psychotherapy all in one place can simplify your care. It may also improve the quality of care as your doctor can see a broader, more in-depth picture of your response to treatment.

A Belief in Privacy

Sometimes, the barriers to seeking treatment for psychological health are about privacy. There may be busy, often very public waiting rooms at large outpatient facilities, or requirements to interact with many staff members just to see the psychiatrist. For those in healthcare, receiving care at a place of work may create hesitation to seek care. Patients also often have concerns about who sees and has access to behavioral health records.

New Directions Psychiatry PLLC is a small, private practice. Because of a deep commitment to privacy, only your doctor is involved in your care. Dr. Gilley is available to patients by phone for questions and concerns and returns patient calls herself. To optimize your privacy, there are no staff involved in patient care or administrative duties.

With discrete online care, there is no receptionist or public waiting room. You can choose a quiet, safe space for your online appointment in Owensboro or any of our surrounding communities. This practice uses an encrypted connection using a healthcare videoconferencing platform.

Why see a Psychiatrist familiar with your community?

With online care you can see psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, physicians’ assistants, and therapists from all over the United States. Does it really matter if the person you see lives in New York or California and has never been to Kentucky?

In today's digital age, online mental health services have revolutionized access to care, making it easier than ever to connect with qualified professionals regardless of geographical boundaries. However, when it comes to seeking an online psychiatrist, the advantage of choosing one who resides in the same region as you cannot be overstated. This proximity offers a unique blend of benefits that contribute to more effective and personalized psychiatry care.

A psychiatrist who knows Owensboro though first-hand experience will be familiar with the culture and customs of our community. An online psychiatrist who lives nearby possesses a deeper understanding of the cultural and regional nuances that impact patients' lives. Familiarity with local customs, values, and even challenges enables the psychiatrist to tailor their approach to better resonate with patients. Factors such as economic conditions and community dynamics all contribute to an individual's well-being. Understanding the specific context of Owensboro and its surrounding area enhances the therapeutic alliance and creates a space where patients feel truly understood and validated. Residents of Owensboro can also benefit from more flexible scheduling options that align with their time zone and local routines.

A Sense of Local Connection

Knowing that your psychiatrist is familiar with the region and its unique dynamics can alleviate feelings of isolation and contribute to a sense of connection. While online psychiatry already offers the convenience of remote sessions, having a local online psychiatrist takes accessibility a step further. Residents of Owensboro can benefit from more flexible scheduling options that align with their time zone and local routines.

Familiarity with Owensboro and Regional Resources

Sometimes, conditions require subspecialized therapy or other treatment. A psychiatrist that knows the local mental health options in Owensboro and our Western Kentucky region can help ensure you get the right kind of care. In rare urgent or emergency situations, a local Kentucky psychiatrist can help guide you on the best options available to you, because they know the local services, hospitals and other resources available in Owensboro and the greater Western Kentucky region. In case of urgent matters or emergencies, a local psychiatrist is more readily available to address your needs.

An online visit with someone in another state who has never once visited Owensboro simply can’t offer you this level of first-hand knowledge.

Mental Health in Owensboro and Daviess County

The most recent Kentucky BRFSS , which examines factors that affect overall health and quality of life, found that 14.4% of adults in the Green River area (including Daviess County), had two weeks or more of poor mental health days in the past month.

The Kentucky BRFSS report also found that 24.6% of adults in our area had ever been diagnosed with depression. Based on 2022 population statistics which showed Owensboro’s population was 61,085 people, we can estimate that about 15,200 people in Owensboro have or have had depression. That’s about one in four people in Owensboro who have or have experienced depression. However, this number is consistent with recent findings from a CDC report released in 2023 that found that Kentucky had the second highest rate of depression in the US. Of those surveyed across Kentucky, 24% acknowledged they had been diagnosed with depression at some point in their life.

We don’t have county-specific information for the rates of anxiety or trauma-related disorders like PTSD. However, NIMH reports an estimated 19.1% of adults in the US had an anxiety disorder in the past year, and that 31.1% of adults experience an anxiety disorder during their lifetime. The estimated lifetime prevalence of PTSD is 6.8%, with an estimated 3.6% of adults experiencing PTSD symptoms in the past year. We can estimate based on Owensboro’s population that in the past year, approximately 11,600 people experienced an anxiety disorder. Approximately 2,200 would have experienced PTSD in the past year.

These statistics show us that psychological concerns are not rare. If you are experiencing mental health symptoms, know that you are not alone in this experience and that there are treatment options. By offering direct-to-doctor online therapy and medication treatment services, New Directions Psychiatry PLLC hopes to increase the options patients have to be seen by a psychiatrist in Owensboro.
